Gnats, drain flies, and fruit flies can enter your home through cracks, holes, and other openings around doors, foundations, and windows. Gnats are most active when the weather warms up, and we can bring them into our home along with produce from our garden, in dirty trashcans, and from other sources. The good news is gnats and fruit flies don’t usually bite. The bad news is while they don’t carry and transmit diseases like mosquitos, they can spread disease-causing bacteria. Before we talk about how to get rid of gnats in your house, let’s first make sure we understand why they’re there. If you don’t over water your plants to begin with, the soil won’t become overly saturated and gnats won’t be attracted.

You’ll need to maintain and clean it a couple of times per year to prevent any harmful substances from growing such as mold and algae. If you’re starting to notice a lot of gnats around your plants, you can do one of two things. First is to put the plant outside and far away from your home. Then clean where the plant was so gnats are no longer attracted to the area. They usually consist of a sweet scented sticky strip that catches the gnats and doesn’t allow them to fly away.

Another option is to use gravel or sand for the top inch or two in your planters. Fungus gnats only feed and breed in the top inch of soil, so the layer of gravel or sand takes the moisture and nutrients the gnats need out of the equation. Cleaning your gutters is an excellent way to stop a gnat problem before it begins. Dirt, soil, leaves and other debris get caught in your gutters and can create blockages. When it rains, everything in your gutters gets moist and becomes the perfect nest for gnats and flies. Your siding can also harbor mold and attract gnats to your home.
Ammonia is toxic to humans, pets, and plants and so you should always keep this product safely out of reach and locked away where young ones and pets can get to it. Furthermore, ammonia should never be mixed with any other type of cleaner as it can readily become even more dangerous. Gnats can prove particularly annoying once they get inside your house—especially since it can be difficult to notice them until an infestation is underway. That remedy involved putting out a plate of water with a little dish soap in it. Unfortunately for gnats, they lose that super-power when you break the surface tension of the water with a few drops of dish soap. Pots with drainage holes also help prevent root rot, which can kill plants over time.
